Welcome to the SONORE Research Study Enrollment Website!

Part 1: Audio and Video

You will engage in eleven 8–10-minute recorded phone calls with acquaintances on a topic of your choosing; and you will produce four 3–10-minute videos of monologue speech on a topic of your choosing (note that you do not have to be visible in the video). Six of these calls will be in your primary language (French or Arabic); five of these calls will be in your secondary language (either non-native accented English, non-native accented Arabic, or non-native accented French).

Part 2: In-Person

You will attend three in-person recording sessions on different days. At each session, you will record one information conversation (15 minutes) and one telephone call (10 minutes), for a total of three conversations and three calls. These conversations may take place with an acquaintance, or if needed, a trained staff member. Two of these sessions will be in English, and one session will be in either Arabic or French.

1. Enroll in the study

Participants can enroll for the study using our secure website. Enrollment involves these steps:

• Provide your name and email so that we can contact you about the study and compensate you for your time
• Provide demographic information including language, year of birth, and sex assigned at birth
• Provide consent for the data you contribute to be used in our research database

Upon enrollment, you will be assigned a Personal Identification Number (PIN) which you will use during the phone calls, video recordings, and in-person sessions. You will also be sent a confirmation email with information about the study.

2. If participating in Part 1, complete your phone calls

You will make eleven phone calls to people you know, like friends, family members, neighbors, and colleagues.

• You and your call partner must speak in the designated language for each call
  • Six calls in your selected primary language only (French or Arabic)
  • Five calls in your selected secondary language (non-native accented English, non-native accented Arabic, or non-native accented French)
• You cannot switch to another language during a call
• Each call should last 8–10 minutes
• You should call at least three different people
• Five of the calls should be made from noisy locations
• You should make calls from at least two different phones. Using headphones or speakerphone mode counts as a different phone.
• You cannot make more than one call per day
• You can talk about anything you like, but the conversation should be natural and interactive, without lengthy periods of silence
• You and your call partner should not discuss personal information or anything that you do not want to have recorded
• You should do at least half of the talking during the call
• You cannot ask other people to make your calls for you
• You cannot pass the phone around, and your call partner cannot pass the phone around to others. There must be only one person talking on each call side, throughout the entire call.

How will my phone calls be recorded?

When you are ready to make a call, you will call the research study phone number and enter your unique participant ID number.

• Call our phone number and enter your participant ID.
• You will be asked for your consent to be recorded.

  • What language will you and your call partner speak? (Arabic, French, English)
  • What kind of phone will you call from? (mobile, landline)
  • How will you talk over your phone? (internal microphone, speakerphone, headset)
  • What is the noise level at your location? (noisy, not noisy)
• Then enter the phone number of the person you want to talk to.
• You will be asked
  • Have you called this person before for this study? (yes, no)
• Our collection system will dial your call partner’s number and ask them for consent to be recorded.
• Our collection system will then connect you and the call will begin.
• After 10 minutes, the recording will end and the call will be disconnected.

3. If participating in Part 1, record and upload your videos

You will record and upload four short videos of yourself talking spontaneously on any topic you like. Alternatively, if you have existing video recordings that meet the study requirements, you can use those videos instead of making new recordings.

Video requirements are summarized below; for each video:

• Speak only in the designated language, without switching to another language or dialect
  • Three videos in your primary language only (no switching to another language)
  • One video in your secondary language
• Each video recording should last between 3–10 minutes
• Use any device you like to make the recording, such as a phone, computer, or camera
• Video recordings should involve only you — no other people should be seen or heard in the video recording
• You do not have to be visible in the video
• You can be in any location during the video recording, as long as your voice can be heard throughout the video. Some background noise like a quiet TV, kitchen noises or traffic noise is acceptable as long as your voice can be heard easily.
• You can move around or stay in one place during the recording.
• You can talk about any topic you like, but we ask that you not share any sensitive personal information, and you must speak spontaneously and naturally throughout the recording. For instance, you could share a memory, talk about your favorite foods, or describe what happened during your day.
• Avoid lengthy pauses or long periods of silence
• Do not read, recite, sing, or engage in other types of speech that are not spontaneous and not extemporaneous
• Do not record yourself speaking during a phone call – the video recording must be an entirely separate event
• Do not apply any video special effects that change or obscure your voice
• Avoid discussion of any topic or personal information that you do not wish to have recorded

After you have recorded each video, you will upload it to our secure website. You will have two options for providing your video: you can either upload a video file or, if you have a video hosted on publicly accessible video hosting sites, you can provide the URL to that video. You will be asked to confirm that the video meets the requirements outlined above, and you will be asked to provide consent for us to use the video in our research study. You will then follow the on-screen instructions to submit your video.

4. If participating in Part 2, attend in-person sessions

You will attend three in-person sessions on different days. Each session will have two components: you will record one in-person conversation and one telephone call per session.

In-person conversation

During the in-person conversation component of each session, you will engage either with a personally selected acquaintance, who will also be enrolled and consented as part of the study, or, alternatively, with a member of the study staff.

• You may bring your own conversation partner, or a member of the study staff will be available to converse with you.
  • For each session, your conversation partner should be unique – that is, you should have a different conversation partner in each session.
• Conversations will last between 10–15 minutes.
• Conversations will be natural and unstructured, on any topic of your choosing.

In-person telephone call

For the telephone call portion of each session, you will make one call to your partner from the in-person conversation.

• Calls will last between 8–10 minutes.
• Conversations will be natural and unstructured, on any topic of your choosing.
• You must be an active speaker on the call, so that your speech comprises no less than half of the call’s speech.
• The callee for the telephone call will be your conversation partner from the informal conversation.
• You will be provided with a smartphone for the duration of the call.

Compensation

Study personnel will conduct a number of automatic and manual checks on your recordings to ensure that they meet study requirements. You will receive compensation for successful recordings, as follows:
